The 4 main components of the WordPress platform

The 4 main components of the WordPress platform and the role
each will play in building your website.
WordPress
WordPress itself is a type of “Content Management System”. In other words, it’s a
piece of software that helps you manage all of the content on your website. So
instead of having to edit your pages and blog posts by wading through HTML files,
you have a nice interface that organizes it all for you by interacting with the server.

Themes
There are thousands of themes, both free and paid. Themes affect the layout and
design of your site, while adding a little functionality at the same time. Most themes
can be customized via options that are built in. For example, you might be able to
change the color of your site, or change the location of your sidebar from the left to
the right. Some themes even have their own framework that allows for drag-anddrop
customizations. Most themes, however, provide simple point-and-click
operations for making configuration changes.

Plugins
Plugins add functionality to your WordPress site. Want to add a contact form?
Install a plugin. Need a gallery on your site? Install a plugin. Pretty much any
functionality that you might want to add to your site has probably already been
developed with a plugin. And the best thing is, they’re almost always free, simple to
install, and easy to configure.

Widgets
Widgets allow you to add content and features to your website. They can be
dragged and dropped into “widget areas” that are usually located in the sidebar,
footer, and sometimes on the Home page. Many plugins have widgets associated
with them so you can add your new feature to the above mentioned places on your
site.
